The CT River is America’s 1st National Blueway
reflecting the efforts made by thousands of concerned citizens to restore the
river to its natural beauty. The picture
you are looking at is a spot described by the Nature Conservancy as ‘one of the last great places on earth’… But what does one company do? It installs, without a permit, an ugly 220’
floating fluorescent orange barrier blocking access to a one-mile long
navigable ‘public trust’ waterway off the river. This floating barrier is the
only thing of its kind on the river in the state.
How could this happen? The story is complicated but simply stated, CT Yankee Atomic Power (CY), owners of a fully decommissioned power plant, claims that the federal government required them to block access to the waterway as part of its licensing obligations. One angry resident said
“If the federal government forced CY to put up this barrier, who am I to protest? But if the feds didn’t, then CY confiscated a one-mile stretch of the Connecticut River, property belonging to the people of the United States - that’s wrong, very wrong.”
Well guess what? The federal government did not require or authorize the closing of the canal…CY did it on its own for self-serving corporate reasons. When CY finally realized it needed a permit the state’s regulatory agency (DEEP) admitted it didn’t even bother to investigate if CY’s permit application claims were true – it just rubberstamped what the company wanted! This is outrageous and if this gets you angry - join the crowd. CY and DEEP have stonewalled criticism, so we need your help to protest…
Please add your name to our petition and tell Governor Malloy and DEEP Commissioner Klee that the river belongs to you and they must remove that ugly orange barrier – NOW!
